General Information
British Airways can arrange wheelchair assistance for passengers up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled time of your flight departure.
Once you have arranged wheelchair assistance through British Airways, the wheelchair will be available at British Airways check-in desk, within the terminal, at the airport.
Determination of service needed
There are different codes which specify the type of service needed. Clarify the correct type according to the following reservation codes:
WCHR
- Passenger can ascend/descend steps - Passenger can make own way to/from aircraft - Passenger cannot make long distances
Amadeus entry : SRWCHRBANN1-ELDERLY PSGR CANT WALK LONG DISTANCE/P1
- Use this code also when passenger has no own wheelchair but needs wheelchair assistance due walking difficulties
WCHS
- Passenger cannot ascend descend steps - Passenger is able to make own way slowly to/from cabin seat
WCHC
- Passenger is comletely immobile - Passenger requires a wheelchair to/from aircraft seat - This code will generate a request for a high lift vehicle for non-jetty served flights
Passengers with own wheelchair
For passengers travelling with their own wheelchair ask the right questions and note the information in the SSR element of the wheelchair request: - What is the weight of the wheelchair?
- What are the dimensions length x height x width (folded dimensions for foldable wheelchairs)?
- Is the wheelchair manual or electric?
If electric: is the battery NON SPILLABLE WET CELL or SPILLABLE WET CELL (Special packing requirements are needed for spillable wet cell batteries)? Battery operated wheelchairs and scooters cannot be taken on board an aircraft and will be taken at check-in as checked baggage
Costs involved
Smaller mobility aids (e.g. crutches) will be carried free of charge in the cabin if weight and space allow. The first larger mobility aid (e.g. wheelchair) will be carried free of charge in the hold, subject to conditions. Additional mobility aids will be charged as excess baggage at the applicable rate. |
